Career Mapping for Emerging Artists - Workshop

This workshop discusses how to conceptualize and support a career in the arts. The class is geared towards the emerging artist. We will transcribe answers to questions that address the work and your needs as an individual, which then will translate to a goal map. After these goals become more tangible, we will go over an intro to the grant/proposal writing process, and receive a list of resources and databases to take the mystery out of grants, sponsorships, and residencies.

This workshop discusses how to conceptualize and support a career in the arts. The class is geared towards the emerging artist. That means you have a regular artmaking practice, and some experience writing and talking about your work.

YOU: So you’re out of art school and know how to create and talk about art, but not how to support an art practice. ALSO YOU: Or maybe you’ve decided to take up art after having another career and have a unique perspective on theory and business. Whatever the case: CONGRATULATIONS! You are on a complicated journey to success, that, if you truly are the artist you think you are, will be the most fulfilling aspect of your life.

The exercises we will use are valuable for visual artists, musicians, and performers of all kinds. First, we will brainstorm the answers to a series of questions that address your work and your needs as an individual, which then will translate to a goal map, and list of the resources we need to make our visions reality. After these goals become more tangible, we will go over an intro to the grant/proposal writing process and receive a list of resources and databases to take the mystery out of grants, sponsorships, and residencies.

Who am I to be telling you all this? ME: Completely unqualified! I’m an emerging performance artist, who has recently left the teaching profession to try and make art full time. I have been compiling these professional development resources for myself, mostly from the books Art/Work by Heather Darcy Bhandari + Jonathan Melber and The Artist’s Guide to Grant Writing by Gigi Rosenberg and am finding the structure of information is a great visual aid and confidence booster when it comes to managing an art career. I am very excited to meet and work with the talented creative folks of Baltimore as I’m sure I have just as much to learn from you as you do from me.
